Anmeldung: what to prepare in your first weeks

A practical overview of address registration preparation, the landlord confirmation and what to track afterward.

Anmeldung is the registration of your address with the local registration authority. The details, appointment system and accepted arrangements depend on your municipality and circumstances, so begin with the official website for the city where you actually live.

Before booking

Check whether you can register at your accommodation and when the address becomes available to you. Ask the housing provider for the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, the landlord or housing-provider confirmation normally needed for registration. A rental agreement alone may not replace it.

Review the authority’s current list for identity documents, civil-status records and any municipal form. Names and dates should be consistent across your paperwork. If a document is not in German, ask the office whether a translation or certification is required rather than assuming.

At and after the appointment

Check the printed registration confirmation before leaving. Keep it accessible; banks, employers and other organizations may ask for evidence of address.

Label your postbox immediately and track incoming letters. Your tax identification number may follow by post if one is being issued, while broadcasting contribution correspondence is a separate matter. Not every letter is a demand for immediate payment, but every deadline deserves a calendar entry.

Common planning mistakes

  • Using instructions from another municipality
  • Booking before confirming that the accommodation permits registration
  • Treating the rental contract as the only housing document
  • Forgetting to include every registering household member in preparation
  • Sending identity scans to unverified third parties offering appointments

If your legal residence position is unclear, seek advice from the relevant authority or a qualified immigration lawyer. Practical preparation cannot determine your entitlement.
